The practice without the claim
Twelve small tools for practices that were built inside religions, and that the people who keep those religions mostly hold cannot be taken out of them. Each page times a practice and keeps a date. Each one prints the tradition's objection before it prints anything else. None of them blesses, scores, or stands in for the teacher the tradition says you need.

The twelve tools

Grouped by the book's appendix, Volume Seven: Way: what a practice costs against what the record supports. The third number is the gap between the claim and the record. The scores rate the claim, not the practice, and nothing is ranked inside a band.
Well supported, cheap or expensive: nobody. No row in this volume scores above 2 on evidence, and that is the finding, not a gap.
Cheap and thin 9 toolswhat survives the removal, at the size the record gives it
04
Uketamo
One discomfort a day, one spoken word of acceptance, then no complaint and no narration. There is no text box on purpose.
Friction 1 · Evidence 2 · Gap 3
05
Stick
Where attention caught, in three words, several times a day, then dropped. The page shows the words and never reads them back as a pattern.
Friction 1 · Evidence 2 · Gap 3
06
Row
Six minutes standing: three sets of counted rowing, the shaking, the still breath. Omoto rites, credited by name.
Friction 2 · Evidence 2 · Gap 4
12
Prayer
A counter that works like a knot cord, a stage you set, and the tradition's warning that this is not done alone, printed every session.
Friction 1 · Evidence 1 · Gap 2
02
Threshold
Hands, mouth, bow at the threshold, and one small bow at every doorway. Derived from misogi and not misogi. The cold water lives in Health.
Friction 1 · Evidence 1 · Gap 3
01
Death
One form of your own death each morning, from Tsunetomo's list, held for a count and written down. A screen before the first morning, because the record says it is the wrong instruction for some.
Friction 1 · Evidence 1 · Gap 4
09
Examen
Five movements, morning and evening. The scrupulosity warning is on the page every time, because the method was built out of one.
Friction 2 · Evidence 1 · Gap 3
11
Turn
A daily watching sit, timed. No formula, no permission, because the orders say a page cannot give one.
Friction 2 · Evidence 1 · Gap 3
07
Sit
Shikantaza: fixed posture, fixed time, no technique. An adverse-effects screen before the first sit. Tide is the guided version.
Friction 2 · Evidence 1 · Gap 4
Expensive and thin 3 tools
08
Cell
One fixed hour in one small room, alone, with nothing. At the end, one tag from Evagrius' eight thoughts.
Friction 3 · Evidence 2 · Gap 3
10
Hour
An hour alone outdoors, talking out loud, and one button for when nothing comes. The words are spoken; the page keeps the count.
Friction 3 · Evidence 2 · Gap 3
03
Route
The same path before dawn, with a few fixed stops and one act at each. It keeps the days walked and no streak, because the no-rest-day rule is the story, not the tool.
Friction 3 · Evidence 1 · Gap 3
The honest limit, stated first. Every practice here was built inside a religion, and in most cases the religion holds that what is left without it is not the practice. Orthodox writers say the prayer is not to be done without an elder; the Sufi orders say a formula is not taken from a page; Breslov says an hour of talking that is not addressed to God is a different act; the shrine tradition says the kami are the point of the bow. Those objections are printed on the pages rather than argued with, because they are not answerable with better sourcing. Several of these practices also have a documented harm record the traditions themselves kept, so four of the pages carry a screen before the practice and one carries it every session. What survives the removal is smaller than what was promised, every time, and still worth the minutes. These tools keep the minutes. They do not keep you.
