Somewhere today, in a coaching course or a psychology lecture or a corporate seminar, a hand is drawing a hill on a whiteboard.
The scene is imagined, but you have sat in it. The marker squeaks. A line goes across the bottom and gets labeled arousal, or stress, or pressure, depending on the room. Another goes up the left side and gets labeled performance. Then the hand makes one confident arc, left to right, up and over and down, and that arc is the point of the whole hour.
The line rises, crests, and falls, a tidy inverted U, and the speaker is saying what speakers have said over this drawing for seventy years: too little charge and you are flat, too much and you fall apart, and at the top of the hill, at some moderate, manageable middle, lives your best.
Then comes the pedigree, delivered with the confidence of settled history: this is the Yerkes-Dodson law, established in 1908.
Nobody in the room asks for the citation. Nobody ever asks for the citation. That is not a failure of the room. That is what a wax seal is for.
It is a wonderful diagram. It flatters common experience, which really does know both failure modes, the sluggish morning and the panicked exam. It fits the volume this series has been building: we have watched pressure summon the watcher and break well-learned skills, which certainly looks like the hill's far slope.
It offers a dial where most performance advice offers only exhortation: find your middle.
And by the end of the hour everyone has copied it into a notebook, and it is the only thing on the board anybody photographs. A diagram that simple does not need a handout. It reproduces itself.
And it carries that 1908 citation like a seal in wax, an experiment older than radio, vindicated by a century of repetition in every textbook that ever mentioned an athlete's nerves.
This season is about that drawing, and it is a different kind of season from any in this volume, because the subject is not a practice or an affliction but a diagram's biography.
Here is the itinerary, plainly, because the story has more turns than any dozen whiteboard retellings of it.
The 1908 experiment is real, and I have read it. It is about mice, electric shocks, and two painted boxes, and it does not say what the seminar says it says.
It does not mention arousal; the word and the concept are absent. Its most repeated finding, for the easy version of its task, is not a hill at all but a straight climb: more shock, faster learning, no summit.
The famous curve was drawn onto the idea decades later by other men, chief among them a Canadian theorist in the 1950s, and then the drawing acquired the old experiment as its pedigree, more or less the way a new building acquires reclaimed brick. For half a century almost nobody cited the paper at all.
You may already be forming the sensible objection, and I would rather have it on the table early: who cares who drew it, if the thing is roughly true? Hold that question. The answer takes most of the season, and it is not the answer you expect, because the story refuses to end as a clean debunk.
When the experiment the diagram always claimed to describe was finally run properly, a few years ago, with modern instruments and thousands of trials, a version of the hill actually appeared.
And in between, a Russian sport psychologist watching real athletes discovered that whatever hill exists is not one hill: each performer seems to crest at a different altitude, some at a calm the diagram calls too little, some at a boil it calls too much.
A drawing that was never a finding, a law that was never a law, and a truth that partly arrived anyway, a century late and individually sized.
