Horney's method: write freely, leave it locked for some days, then re-read looking only for the place you flinch. One mark, and the page computes nothing.
Before the first entry. The book this comes from states its own ceiling: the resistances you can find alone are the ones you are least defended against, which means the thing you most need is the thing this method is least able to reach. It has one clear failure mode. If a person with a strong self critical structure uses it, it becomes a better organized way to prosecute themselves, and the book has no stopping rule. Here is one: if the re-read turns into a case against you, close the page. That is not you doing it wrong. That is the method reaching its limit.
Write
days
You set the wait. Horney's point is that you cannot read it as a stranger while you still remember writing it.
Ready to re-read
Locked
The honest limit, stated first. The woman who wrote this method printed its ceiling in the same book that taught it, which is the rarest thing in this volume and the reason the season exists. She walked out of her institute in 1941 and published in 1942 with an explicit argument that a layperson can do this alone, and with the structural objection stated plainly: the blind spot problem does not go away because you are being honest. The case in the book is her own reconstruction. There is no outcome literature on self analysis as a method, none, which is not the same as evidence that it fails. What this page adds to a notebook is the lock, because the waiting is the only part of the procedure a piece of software can actually enforce, and the one mark, because one mark is all she asks you to make.
